Dreaming of Positano

"Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone." - John Steinbeck.

when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone."

- John Steinbeck.

This heartfelt quote by John Steinbeck sums up one's experience to Positano. It does bite deep.

Positano is regarded as one of the most beautiful towns perched on Italy's Amalfi Coast. Anyone visiting is in awe of the stunning vistas and colorful architecture that seems to cling to the cliffside.

Tiny winding streets and footpaths lead you through the town. Passing by boutiques, galleries, and artisan shops, you are romanced by the essence of the la dolce vita. One immediately wants to live this simple life and slow down and drink it in.

GETTING THERE

Suppose you have visited the Amalfi Coast or any of the towns and villages south of Naples. In that case, you can understand why it is advisable to hire a professional limousine or taxi service to deliver you to your hotel or villa. Driving yourself through the endless hairpin turns can cause hair-raising stress and panic in your vehicle. It is also impossible to take in the beauty and breathtaking vistas of the coast while white-knuckling the steering wheel. Therefore, one usually only drives once then learns to relax and enjoy the trip while the professionals take care of the transport.

Ferries, water taxis, and busses are an excellent way of traveling from Naples but it can be slow. However, it is an exciting way to arrive if you are packing light. The Amalfi Coast is truly a luxury destination filled with 5-Star luxury resorts clinging to the limestone rock with beaches that rival any seaside destination worldwide. The climate is perfect from May to October and the food is delicious in its simplicity.

ACCOMODATIONS

Le Sirenuse is an Amalfi icon of Italian hospitality. The Sersale family first opened Le Sirenuse to guests in 1951 after inhabiting it as a home. Over the last 40 years, the hotel has become a highly sought-after address. Visit the hotel, and you know why. The interior of the hotel is exquisite—here, every detail matters. The family has been acquiring and working with local artisans to carry on the southern Italian traditions.

Franco’s Bar is a spectacular spot to meet friends or have the perfect aperitif before dinner. Watching the sunset behind the mountains is your call that dinner will be waiting in one of the seaside restaurants below.

Hotel Buca di Bacco sits in the heart of Positano. Not only is this a fabulous hotel to stay at, but you can enjoy a family meal, gelato, and your morning cappuccino at the bar on the beach level. Upon arriving in Positano, our first meal was in the 2nd level Buca di Bacco Ristorante. We had been dreaming of pasta smothered in lemon essence. So, sitting on the beachside under the coral chandeliers, gazing out to the azure blue sea, we dined on the best pasta we had ever tasted - Spaghetti al Limone. One can only imagine that these grapefruit-sized lemons can be so tasty.

A visit to Buca di Bacco became a daily routine: morning coffee at the stand-up bar, lunches, gelato, and of course evening cocktails on the 3rd floor patio watching the beach pack up for the day. One has to also walk the stairs to Caffè Positano for the grilled mozzarella on lemon leaves. Dine on their delicious menu on the outdoor patio tables which hang cliffside with the most beautiful view of the town and Spiaggia Grande beach below.

In praise of the Amalfi lemon, a true wonder of the world.

You can't help but notice them as you drive by groves of these beauties dotting the coastline. More than double the size of the ordinary lemon, they have thick and wrinkled skin, which exudes an intense lemony perfume.

The flesh of these lemons are sweet and succulent. Their juice, peel, and even their leaves are essential ingredients in the gastronomy of Amalfi. The area is famous for Limoncello, a liqueur made from these local lemons.

The Amalfi Coast is an artisan mecca for handcraftsmanship dating back centuries inspired by the Sun, Sea, and Land. From perfume to paper to paintings, jewelry to ceramics, and timeless fashion known as the "Moda Positano", there's much to delight the senses. One cannot leave the area without choosing a treasure to take home to remember the time spent in Amalfi bliss.

The Amalfi Coast is an area on the west side of Italy in the region of Campania. It is 50 kilometers long, stretching from Positano just south of Naples to Vietri Sul Mare. Life slows down on the Amalfi coast as the gentle sea breeze caresses the land and lulls one into happy contentment where one can indulge in the simple pleasures of the senses.
