Mulled Wine

Ingredients

  • 1 (750ml) bottle of dry red wine
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds
  • ¼ cup (60ml) brandy (optional)
  • ¼ cup (50g) honey or sugar
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise

GARNISHES

  • citrus slices, mixture of orange/lemon/lime
  • cinnamon sticks
  • star anise

Method

Combine all ingredients in a non-aluminum saucepan, and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat being careful not to boil.  Add the oranges, cloves, cinnamon, and star anise in cheesecloth and secure with kitchen string.  Add spice bundle to wine.  Reduce heat to medium-low, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes, but no more than 3 hours. Strain, and serve warm with your desired garnishes.

*You can also place the mulled wine in a slow cooker to keep warm. Then simply strain and pull out the bundle when ready to serve.
