In a medium pot over high heat, bring 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and stir until the sugar is dissolved to create a simple syrup. Remove from heat and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour. In a serving container, add the lemon juice, 1½ cups sugar, cranberry juice and chilled simple syrup. Stir until the sugar is dissolved completely. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve over ice.
