Ingredients

  • 8 ounces (225g) lean ground beef
  • ½ teaspoon (2ml) kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon (1ml) freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon (2ml) Italian seasoning
  • ¼ cup (25g) onion, finely diced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 24-ounce (680ml) jar of your favorite tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup (25g) Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 package cheese ravioli, fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup (100g) mozzarella cheese, shredded

GARNISH

  • freshly chopped basil
  • freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Method

Season the ground beef with salt, pepper and Italian seasoning. Then brown it in the cast iron skillet on medium high.    Add in the diced onion and minced garlic. Cook for another 5 minutes until the beef is cooked through and the onion and garlic are softened. If needed, drain off excess fat.  Pour in the jar of tomato sauce and stir to combine with the meat mixture.  Add in the Parmesan cheese and combine thoroughly.

Add the ravioli and simmer until heated through, about 5-10 minutes. If you are using frozen ravioli, it will take a little longer.

Top with the shredded mozzarella cheese and place the skillet under the broiler until the cheese is melted and lightly browned. This will only take about a minute so watch it carefully to prevent burning.

Remove from the oven and garnish with freshly chopped basil and Parmesan cheese.
